MARVEL, RON – Coaching – University of the Ozarks – 1961-1965:  Ron has the most wins in women’s college basketball in state history with 489 wins. Over his 24-year UCA college career, he compiled a record of 489-207 – 27th in Division II for winning percentage (.7026) and is 15th in Division II for total number of wins. His UCA teams averaged 20+ wins a year over his career, and he never had a losing season. His teams made 10 playoffs in the AIC & made 4 visits to the NCAA Tournament. A Coal Hill native, Marvel coached for 39 years, including stints at Fountain Lake and Magazine high schools before coming to UCA. He began as the Sugar Bears head coach in 1980 and immediately turned around a program that had endured three consecutive losing seasons. In his first season at UCA Marvel led the team to a 17-11 record and a postseason appearance. Over the next two decades, with teams that featured several All-Americans the Sugar Bears made 12 consecutive postseason appearances. In his 24 seasons, Marvel reached the postseason 21 time and took his teams to the AWISA, NAIA and NCAA tournaments. He came out of retirement in 2009 to coach at Bryant, ending up with over 1,300 career wins in 39 years of coaching. He was Coach of the Year 4 times in his college district, 2 times in the AIC, inductee in both the UCA and College of the Ozarks Halls of Fame.
